The construction industry is suffering from a labor shortage. A recent survey conducted by AGC of America found that 80% of construction firms struggled to find hourly workers in 2021. The question is: How can the construction industry attract more young people? With the median age of the average construction worker being 42 years old, there’s more that can be done to attract younger workers.
But rather than focus on the potential problems of a diminished workforce, there is certainly plenty that can be done to attract and retain young workers. The construction industry needs to present itself to younger generations as a lucrative and fulfilling career. But how can it accomplish this?
1. Avoid Student Debt
It’s time to move on from the idea that a four-year degree is the only way to achieve a good-paying and rewarding career. There is no reason for high school graduates to cripple themselves with student debt simply because society tells them that is what they are supposed to do. Many construction jobs do not require a college education. Apprenticeships and trade schools offer inexpensive and accessible ways to enter the construction industry and build a career.
2. Create Industry Events to Attract Young People
High schools used to offer traditional shop classes, but those days are long gone. Still, many cities and municipalities are making steps to reverse that trend. Take New York as one example. In 2019, 600 high school students visited the New York fairgrounds to take part in Construction Career Day. Students spent time speaking with contractors who introduced them to what they do and how they live their lives. Events like these demonstrate to students that a career in construction is both fun and rewarding.
3. Embrace Technology
Construction companies need to get creative in how they approach young workers. Consider building interactive websites that allow young people to explore the construction industry. Different pages and interactive elements provide important details on apprenticeships, job types and wages. Companies should also embrace video games. Sound strange? Consider that technology like drones and augmented reality are increasingly being used in the construction sector and related trades. Software companies are actively involved in creating simulations that teach young people how construction job sites work in a fun and interactive way.
Here at AGC of Washington, we take great pride in introducing young people to the trade we all love. It’s time for construction companies and industry advocates to embrace techniques that draw young people to the trades!
