A career as a contractor can be incredibly rewarding, but only if you put in the extra effort. Industry practices are constantly changing, new tools regularly hit the market, and safety recommendations continuously evolve. If you don’t take the time to do your homework and stay informed, you could lose out on potential bids, leave a project incomplete, or face legal consequences like penalties and fines.
As you can see, there are many reasons to participate in continuing education. But what if you’re schedule’s already busy and you’re short on time? Setting aside as little as one hour a week for studying is more than enough to help you stay on top of your game. If you’re unsure where to begin, start here:
1.) Take a course from AGC of America. Our parent organization, AGC of America, offers a number of educational programs to enhance career development and member knowledge. No matter your specialty, there’s likely a course that’s right up your alley. Some of the most popular offerings include building information modeling (BIM), project management, and lean construction. Each course varies in length and credits offered. 2.) Try a do-it-yourself project. Is there a specific carpentry technique you’re trying to learn? Do you want to master the use of a new power tool? Instead of watching videos or reading a manual, immerse yourself in the activity. There’s no better way to learn new skills than by practicing them in real-time. Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed. Once you get the hang of it, you can challenge yourself further.
3.) Enroll in an apprenticeship. No matter your age or career experience, it’s never too late to enroll in an apprenticeship. Some skills are so specialized, the only way to really master them is through one-on-one instruction. Apprenticeships can serve as a career stepping stone, too. If you’re unhappy with your current position, an apprenticeship can get your foot in the door somewhere else.
4.) Become an AGC WA member. When you become a member of AGC Washington, you instantly gain access to a network of fellow professionals who are as passionate about the construction industry as you. With monthly networking events, regular training opportunities and access to state and federal legislators, it’s a one-stop-shop for all of your career goals and needs.
By making an effort to regularly build on your professional skills and knowledge, you’re bound to have a long and successful career. To learn more about the benefits of AGC membership, click here.
