Construction is always a strong indicator of the economic health of our state. The industry’s health is a key indicator of how things are going for all residents and families in Washington State.
While there are challenges for the state’s economic health, there are also some significant signs of progress that’s been made — all relative to construction’s impact. Our members should feel proud of their work throughout the state to make it a better place for everyone.
In December, we again published information gathered from the University of Washington’s recent study of construction and its economic impact on the state. We share it with elected officials to better inform them of how our industry is vital to the lifeblood of the state economy.
Here are some highlights from the study, which are also available as part of the online impact card we give to state leaders.
A big part of the workforce
Construction employment increased year-over-year by 4.3%. This includes a total of about 286,000 people at 10% of Washington State’s private sector workforce.
Major tax contributions
Construction businesses in the state paid more than $3.4 billion in state sales taxes. That’s a large 26% of the state total, and is more than other industries in the state, including services (22%), wholesale trade (6%) and manufacturing (2%).
Excellent opportunities
The total construction payroll stands now at close to $21.3 billion. That is 9.8% of the total payroll for all industries. The pay average for construction workers is also about $68,000. The top end of that is with construction supervisors at $112,000, with laborers on the scale at about $54,500.
The far reach of the dollar
Did you know that for each dollar invested in new construction, an extra $2.09 is generated for the state economy? Also, that $1 investment translates to a 58-cent earnings increase for all households, not just those with ties to construction.
